The UPR is plain and simple a photo marathon. We haven't invented the wheel, although sometimes it does feel like it. In a nutshell, participants are asked to make a series of photos based on themes that are disclosed on the day itself, as they walk through the city along given checkpoints within a certain timeframe. For the UPR that means you need to make a series of 3 photos per theme and deliver your photo selection at the end.

tickets & registration

  • Anyone aged 18 years and older is eligible to participate at the UPR.

  • Each UPR event requires a single ticket per person.

  • Tickets are sold through Eventbrite, and can be purchased online up to the closing time of the first checkpoint.

  • Cancellations are possible and refund requests are valid till 1 month before the race date. The ticket price will be refunded minus the webshop (Eventbrite) service cost.

  • Tickets can also be passed off to someone else in case you aren’t able to participate yourself. If you want we can also transfer your purchased ticket to another race event if you prefer.

start & checkpoints

  • The first and last checkpoints will be announced well in advance before the event, so you can plan around it.

  • At the first checkpoint you will receive the first theme and the location of the next checkpoint.

  • Every participant must check in in person at every checkpoint, including the finish.

  • Checkpoints are open for a set period of time, so make sure you get there on time, or you’ll be disqualified.

  • You can photograph your themes in any order and at any time you want. However, they must be taken between start and finish on the race day.

finish & submission

  • You must submit the photos you have selected for each theme next day before 13:00.

  • You need to submit 3 photos per theme, so 12 in total for 4 themes.

  • Resize your photos in so that they don’t exceed 1600px on the longest side.

  • You must submit your photos in JPG-format. Before you deliver your photos, rename like this:
      [your_full_name]_T[theme:#]_[photo:##]
      pietje_puk_T1_01, pietje_puk_T1_02, …

  • Submit your photos using WeTransfer before the race ends: (email to: info@urbanphotorace.com
      Message: [your full name])

tips & tricks: prep your gear

  • Charge your batteries just before the race. Bring 1 or 2 spares. think about bringing a charger or a powerbank too.

  • Pack all the gear you think you’ll need: tripod, flash, lenses, batteries, cards, etc.

  • Check your camera settings and make sure you’re shooting in the right resolution.

  • Format your memory card (back them up first!). Make sure you bring a spare card in case one might fail. Also, please be sure they’re actually in your camera before the start of the race.

  • Bring a device you can use to edit your photos at the finish: your phone, a tablet or a laptop with the proper apps.

tips & tricks: prep yourself

  • It’s going to be a long day and you’ll be walking a lot. Typically, from start to finish should be around 5 KM. However, people usually walk 15 KM on a 8-hour race.

  • Check the weather in advance and dress yourself appropriately.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothes!

  • At the checkpoints we’ll provide all required information digitally using QR-codes.

  • Use Google maps to get familiar with the area you’ll be racing in, especially if you’ve never been there before.

  • Bring a public transport map of the area, in case you want/need to travel by tram or bus through the city.

tips & tricks: prep your mind

  • Remember, creativity is key. Whatever that means for you and how you get it going.

  • We can briefly explain the themes in case you have any questions, but we will refrain ourselves from diving into suggestions or deep explanations.

  • You can photograph your themes in any order and at any time you want. So just start shooting, it might be useful later on.

  • Be original, don’t just copy someone else’s ideas. Try to interpret the theme and the subject on your own way.
    The Jury will appreciate that!

  • Read up on other other types of photography or techniques, these might come in hand to tackle an idea for a theme.
